Description

Rare Proof 1835 Half Cent, Tied For Finest Certified

1835 PR 65 Red and Brown NGC. B-2, C-2, R.6 as a proof. An exceptionally rare proof, Breen reports that "approximately a dozen-and-a-half proofs have been seen or reported." This is an unquestioned proof that displays deeply mirrored fields, and the design elements have pinpoint detailing. Both sides show some patination, but the obverse is much deeper in hue with much of that side a rich cobalt-blue. The reverse, on the other hand, has a fiery-red center with cherry-red color at the perimeter. The only marks that might be useful in tracing the pedigree of this coin are a couple of tiny planchet flakes, one in the right obverse field out from star 9, and the other, even smaller, out from star 11. A rarely offered opportunity to acquire this date in the proof format. One of only four pieces certified in all grades by both services (6/96) with this piece tied for finest certified with a single PCGS coin. (NGC ID# 26Z4, PCGS# 1248)
