1844 1/2 C ORIGINAL, BN
1844 Half-Cent, Proof 64 Brown1844 Original PR 64 Brown NGC. While some proof half cents and cents from the 1830s through the 1850s are less convincing to the collector who is accustomed to seeing modern proof coinage, this coin "carries its own credentials." The fields are mirrored on both sides and the rims are wide and fully squared off. Breen was of the opinion only about 16 examples are now extant from a small mintage of only 46 coins (originals and restrikes), and this is reinforced by the certification services figures: PCGS, 9 total examples, NGC 4 examples. Some of the original mint red color is still intact and is intermixed with browning in the fields and the more exposed areas of the coin. There are no mentionable carbon spots or marks on this very choice example. Very rare and of interest to both copper enthusiasts as well as collectors of 19th century proof type. (NGC ID# 26ZA, PCGS# 1272)
