Description

Scarce 1850 Half Cent, PR 65 Red and Brown PCGS

1850 1/2 C PR 65 Red and Brown PCGS. Although the original mintage figure of this proof issue is unknown, Walter Breen speculates that only about a dozen specimens are extant today. This is a pristine gem representation with a bold strike that leaves no star centril, hair feature, or leaf detail undefined. The obverse is predominantly orange-red, although we note an area of brown patination between the top of Liberty's head and stars 6 through 9. The reverse carries a blanket of chocolate-brown patination that yields slightly to tan hues about the peripheries. The fields on both sides display modest reflectivity under a suitable light source and contrast nicely with the devices. An elusive issue, this proof represents a fleeting opportunity for the early copper specialist. (NGC ID# 26ZP, PCGS# 1312)
