Description:
1864 Bronze Cent, PR66 Red Ultra Cameo
The Only Coin So Graded
1864 1C Bronze No L PR66 Red Ultra Cameo NGC. Beginning in July 1864, the Mint substituted bronze cents for their copper-nickel counterparts in proof sets. Including the limited number of singles that were also delivered, the original mintage of the proof 1864 bronze Indian cent is believed to be in the neighborhood of just 150 pieces. There are precious few examples extant at the PR66 Red grade level, especially deeply cameoed. Simply phenomenal quality and eye appeal, the mirrored reflectivity in the fields just could not be any deeper. Set against the illimitable depth in the fields is the frost that covers the devices on each side. The only surface flaw is a cluster of tiny darker specks of color in the left obverse field. Census: 1 in 66 Ultra Cameo, 0 finer (12/12).
Ex: Alex Highland Collection (Heritage, 6/2002), lot 5201, which realized $18,400.(Registry values: P7) (PCGS# 92278)
