Description:
1864 Copper Nickel Cent, PR65 Cameo
Impressively Contrasted
1864 1C Copper Nickel PR65 Cameo PCGS. The 1864 has the lowest proof mintage of all the copper-nickel cents with only 370 pieces struck. While much scarcer than the 1862, the production quality is similar with deeply mirrored fields and several high-grade examples that exhibit frost on the devices -- such as this piece. The surfaces are light in color, but not quite original "white" and show an even layer of red patina over each side. The only identifiable irregularity (and a slight one) that helps identify this coin is a patch of pale lilac in the lower left obverse field. Population: 24 in 65 Cameo, 5 finer (10/12).
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 10/2009), lot 128, where it sold for $2,622.(Registry values: N2998) (PCGS# 82265)
