Premium Gem Matte Proof
1908 Motto Ten Dollar
None Finer at PCGS

1908 $10 Motto PR66 PCGS. CAC. The Saint-Gaudens design for the new ten dollar denomination was introduced in 1907 with the No Periods modification as developed by Charles Barber. The only proof gold eagles made generally available for collectors, however, were of the series-ending Liberty Head design. The 1908 With Motto eagles were the first proofs of the Saint-Gaudens design that the average collector could purchase from the Mint, produced in the new matte proof format (or formats) to the extent of 116 pieces. Walter Breen describes three proof formats in his Proof Encyclopedia -- a "pale orange-yellow, many shades lighter than next"; the usually seen finish on almost all known examples, a dark matte proof finish "between khaki and olive color"; and a single specimen Breen reports with the satin or Roman gold finish.
Garrett and Guth write that "as a date, this is the most commonly available of the Proof issues. Orders for these coins were large, as the 1908 coins were the first Proofs generally available to collectors. Many survive in Gem condition."
The present Premium Gem is one of eight submissions certified at PCGS, and there are none finer at that service (11/11). The surfaces on this piece appear every bit as flawless as the grade implies, with no visible luster grazes or signs of contact. The surfaces show a fine-grained matte surface with slightly lighter color near the obverse rim -- a compelling and eminently collectible example of this early 20th century gold rarity.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2AME, PCGS# 8890)

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.

The staff at Heritage are amazing to work with. My wife and I were given the "red carpet treatment" from the moment we walked in. We felt safe and secure the moment we arrived.
