Description:
PCGS 1908 PR 65. Always a popular issue as the first year of the new Saint-Gaudens design, the proofs of 1908 show the distinctive khaki and olive color that is common to all three denominations of gold proofs of this year. This piece has an even blend of those two colors and the surfaces are virtually perfect. When the coin is tilted just so beneath a light, one sees a very faint disturbance in the luster in the central portion of the obverse. This is the only flaw we can find, otherwise this upper-end coin would surely grade even higher. Population: 9 in 65, 4 finer. (NGC ID# 268E, PCGS# 8890)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
