Description

Gorgeous Gem Proof 1910 Indian Gold Eagle

1910 $10 PR65 PCGS. A very attractive Gem proof which has the Roman Finish style surfaces. These are slightly lighter lemon-yellow color with semibrilliant reflectivity. The face of Liberty and the fields are outstanding, with no handling evidence beyond a couple of faint wispy lines in the fields. The strike is full and complete, as expected for a proof. The reported mintage of 204 pieces is likely deceptive, as many were melted around 1917 that went unsold by that time. Others of course, suffered the usual indignities of mishandling or even entering circulation during the swirling economic collapse of the 1930s, or were turned in by obedient citizens during the great gold call in of 1933. These factors combined to reduce the available coins greatly. Evidence of this is seen in the combined NGC and PCGS population reports, which note a grand total of 50 proof pieces graded in all by the two services. At the Gem Proof 65 level, this coin is one of nine so graded with an even dozen seen in higher grades.

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
