Description:
Superb Gem Proof 1910 Indian Eagle
Among the Finest Certified
Artistic Roman Finish

1910 $10 PR67 NGC. A fairly generous mintage of 204 proof Indian eagles was achieved in 1910, but the issue is more elusive than that total suggests. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth state, "In fact, the 1910 issue rates as the second-rarest date of the eight Proof dates that are generally available to collectors." The Mint switched to a Roman finish for gold proofs in 1909, after collectors rejected the matte proof finish of 1907 and 1908. This process produced a lighter, more reflective surface than the matte proof style, but collectors still preferred the old brilliant proofs of previous years. It is likely that many specimens went unsold and were subsequently melted after the end of the year. Present-day collectors appreciate the artistic merits of the Roman finish, and prize these coins whenever they become available.
This magnificent Superb Gem is among the finest known 1910 Indian eagles, and neither NGC nor PCGS has certified any coin in higher numeric grade (11/11). The design elements display razor-sharp definition throughout, with fine detail evident in Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers. Even the lower headdress feathers are sharply defined. The attractive yellow-gold surfaces are highlighted by vivid hints of peach and orange, with slightly granular texture and vibrant mint luster on both sides. This coin possesses tremendous eye appeal to complement the high technical grade. This is only the second time Heritage has been privileged to offer a 1910 Indian eagle in PR67 condition. Census: 5 in 67, 0 finer (11/11).
