Description:
Gem Matte Proof 1911 Eagle
1911 $10 PR66 PCGS. A breathtaking piece of matte proof gold that can probably withstand the closest scrutiny by the most discerning collector. Each granule on the matte surface has its own individual sparkle, and collectively each side has a radiant glow that is unequaled by any other method of coinage manufacture. The surfaces are virtually flawless without the usual shiny so often present. However, there is what appears to be a planchet flaw through the F of OF and the first A of AMERICA on the upper reverse. Also, a tiny abrasion is noted at 9 o'clock on the reverse rim. The usual "mustard" color is seen with a slight olive tinge on the highpoints of the devices. Of the 95 proofs struck, Akers estimates that only 20-25 may exist today. Population: 4 in 66, 1 finer (4/05).(#8893) (Registry values: N10218) (NGC ID# 26YC, PCGS# 8893)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
