Description

Near-Gem Proof 1909 Half Eagle
A 'Roman Gold' Experiment

1909 $5 PR64 NGC. CAC. The mintage of proof Indian half eagles in 1909, as noted in Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins among other places, is split between 77 coins with the bright "Roman gold" finish and a single matte proof specimen. The brighter finish was popular with a number of collectors who objected to the matte finish seen on 1908 (and the single 1909) gold proofs, though the high price of collecting proof gold meant overall interest remained low. This yellow-gold example, bright and textured, is an attractive near-Gem specimen with a few small disturbances to the luster but great all-around eye appeal. Census: 14 in 64, 17 finer (2/11).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25ZS, PCGS# 8540)
