Gem Matte Proof 1911 Indian Half Eagle1911 $5 PR65 PCGS. Today, matte proof gold coins are among the numismatic elite, delicacies that maintain a high level of desirability and demand. At the time they were issued, this was not the case. Only those collectors who desired to maintain their run of proof gold coinage sought out examples like this. A mustard-yellow Gem, this proof has traces of olive and hints of deep orange color, with faint gray toning lines on the obverse. Each side has a single tiny spot that may aid the pedigree researcher. The obverse has a tiny spot between stars 7 and 8, near the corner of the top feather in the headdress. The reverse has a similar spot immediately below the first A in AMERICA. Matching photos of matte proof gold coins for identical pedigree markers is one of the most challenging aspects of numismatic research.
