Lovely Gem Matte Proof 1911 Indian Head Five1911 $5 PR 66 NGC. Unlike many of its business strike counterparts, this stunning proof specimen displays powerful striking characteristics throughout. The Indian's headdress as well as the eagle's trailing shoulder exhibit needle sharp definition that does full justice to every last design element. The faces show the dark matte finish that typifies this issue as well as the 1908 proof delivery, although the texture between the two issues is slightly different. Both the obverse and the reverse display memorable preservation and are devoid of even the most trivial surface disruption. Of the 139 proof half eagles that emerged from the Philadelphia Mint's presses in 1911, the federal government undoubtedly melted many as unsold at the end of the year. An understandably rare issue, the present example's technical superiority serves to enhance its already noteworthy desirability. Population: 12 in 66, 2 finer (9/99).
