Description:

1914 Indian Half Eagle, PR66
No Numerically Finer Coins at PCGS
Only 125 Pieces Struck
1914 $5 PR66 PCGS. CAC. The Mint experimented with the matte proof or sandblast surface for gold proofs for the last time in 1914, increasing the size of the microscopic particles and imparting a darker finish to the coins. Unfortunately, the public had lost interest in proof gold by this time, due to the unpopularity of the various European-style finishes of earlier years. A small mintage of 125 proof half eagles was accomplished in 1914, but even this production total proved overly optimistic and many of the coins failed to sell, with the remainder destroyed after the end of the year. Probably no more than 60-75 examples survive today in all grades.

The 1914 proof Indian half eagle began appearing at auction at least as early as the Dr. G.F.E. Wilharm Collection (B. Max Mehl, 2/1921), where lot 304 in the half eagle section was tersely described as, "1914 Sand blast proof. Scarce." Specimens appear at auction about once per year in recent times, with this particular coin setting the record for a price realized at auction ($74,750) when it was recently offered as lot 5105 of the Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5/2012).

This spectacular Premium Gem is a deep mustard color, with the only minuscule disruptions in the fabric a tiny "dot" in the obverse field before the Indian's neck, and one on the reverse above the last T in TRUST. The incuse design elements exhibit razor-sharp definition throughout, as expected from a proof of this era. Eye appeal is outstanding. This coin will be a welcome addition to the finest collection or Registry Set. Population: 4 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (8/13).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5/2012), lot 5105, realized $74,750.(Registry values: N7079) (PCGS# 8545)
