Description

Lovely 1908 Matte Proof Indian Two and a Half

1908 $2 1/2 PR 64 PCGS. This year marks the debut of Pratt's Indian quarter eagle design and the Philadelphia Mint's first use of the matte finish on proofs of the denomination. Although government records indicate that 236 pieces were produced, public indifference to the matte finish left many pieces unsold at the end of the year. Most of these were undoubtedly melted and it is unlikely that more than 50 1908 proof Indian quarter eagles survive in all grades. This near-Gem displays the characteristically dark, golden-amber color of the issue. The strike is much more complete than typically encountered on business strikes in this series and the smooth surfaces have some claim to a full Gem grade. (NGC ID# 289G, PCGS# 7957)
