Attractive Roman Finish 1910 Quarter Eagle, Proof 63 PCGS1910 $2 1/2 PR63 PCGS. An enchanting Roman Gold proof Quarter Eagle that appears at first glance to have flawless features. The mintages for proof gold struck in 1910 were extraordinarily high--either the figures were in error or the vast majority of the coins struck were later melted. The official mintage for the 1910 Quarter Eagle was a whopping 682 proofs. However, survivors most likely number only 75-100 pieces, indicative of a much smaller mintage than the official one. The Roman Gold finish is quite unlike any other proof finish in U.S. coinage, and it is limited to only two years, 1909 and 1910, making these pieces even more desirable to advanced gold collectors. The brighter luster of the Roman Gold finish is certainly apparent on this coin, and the surfaces display rich reddish patina that is lovely indeed. The only flaws we could find upon close inspection were some discreet hairlines on the obverse and a couple of microscopic contact marks.(#7959) (Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 289J, PCGS# 7959)
