Description:
Appealing Gem Proof 1910 Quarter Eagle
1910 $2 1/2 PR65 PCGS. CAC. The second edition of David Akers' Handbook of 20th Century United States Gold Coins 1907-1933 rather succinctly dismisses the anomalous recorded mintage of 682 proof coins as "simply too high in relation to the number of coins that have survived." The number is either a bookkeeping error, or a record mintage that was subsequently melted. In the latter scenario, the Mint, after producing the unpopular proofs in two different styles for 1908 and 1909, anticipated record sales for the 1910 that simply failed to materialize. Akers comments that the Mint probably released no more than 200 examples of the 1910 proof quarter eagle.
Nearly all of the 1910 proofs were produced with the so-called Roman or satin finish, a cross between a matte and mirrored texture. This is a remarkably attractive example, with scant evidence of contact save for a single, hair-thin scrape beneath the Indian's chin. The semireflective surfaces are consistently honey-gold, with broad and generous eye appeal. Population: 10 in 65, 6 finer (2/09).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 289J, PCGS# 7959)
