1910 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC....
Bold 1910 'Roman Finish' Quarter Eagle, PR661910 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. In the early part of the 20th century, there were essentially three different finishes used for proof coins. Initially the Liberty Head gold proofs had brilliant mirrored surfaces. They were followed by matte or "sandblast" finish coins that featured dull and non-reflective surfaces. The third finish is seen on this coin, featuring a satiny finish without a mirrored surface, but also lacking the normal mint frost seen on most circulation strike coins.
This boldly defined "Roman Finish" Premium Gem proof has exquisite bright yellow surfaces with nary a blemish on either side. Few 1910 proof quarter eagles have survived in such high grade, with just 13 pieces that NGC has certified at finer grade levels (1/09). The finish is satiny with a fine-grained surface that exhibits faint die polishing lines in the fields on each side.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 289J, PCGS# 7959)
