Choice Proof 1914 Indian Quarter Eagle1914 $2 1/2 PR64 NGC. After the final-year 1915, the 1914 boasts the lowest mintage (117 pieces) among proof Quarter Eagles of the Indian type. All were struck with a coarse, sandblast finish (per Breen, 1988), and the typical color is well represented by this olive-gold specimen. This coin is devoid of bothersome incompleteness of strike, and the surfaces are also remarkably abrasion-free even for the PR64 level of preservation. In fact, the outward appearance is suggestive of a Gem designation, although close inspection under a loupe reveals a few miniscule planchet flaws (as struck) in the left obverse field. Nevertheless, this is an attractive representative of an issue with an extant population of perhaps only 60-70 pieces. (NGC ID# 289N, PCGS# 7963)
