Near-Gem Matte Proof 1914 Quarter Eagle1914 $2 1/2 PR64 NGC. The 1914 quarter eagle proof is one of the more frequently seen within the series. Even through the recorded proof mintage was only 142 pieces, it is seen more often than the 1912 or 1913 issues. The Mint tweaked its method of matte proof production slightly in this year, making the surface facets larger and the overall reflectivity less. But this piece displays surfaces that are brighter than most examples seen, with a slight greenish tinge to the color. There are a few tiny breaks in the luster on the high points of the design that account for the near-Gem grade, but this attractive piece should nonetheless find ready bidders. Census: 25 in 64 (1 in 64+), 45 finer (10/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 289N, PCGS# 7963)
