1854 1C PR65 Red and Brown NGC....
Gem Red and Brown Proof 1854 Large Cent1854 1C PR65 Red and Brown NGC. N-12. The exact mintage of this issue is not known, but Breen (1977) states that proof large cents are less rare than the similarly dated half cent. He asserts that 30-50 proof 1854 cents are extant, at least one of which is impaired. Repunching is seen at the base of the 1 in the date, as well as faint die file marks below the last three digits in the date. These features are diagnostic. The borders are broad with wire rims and the fields exhibit noticeable reflectivity at all angles. Although many proof 1854 cents were impressed slightly off-center, the present example is nicely centered with an even strike. The focal features are crisply defined, but several of the obverse stars lack full radial lines. Rich chestnut-brown, crimson, and blue coloration is seen on each side. Exceptional spot-free surfaces and unquestionable Gem quality overall. Population: 2 in 65, 1 finer (12/04).(#1992) (Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 2272, PCGS# 1992)
