Description:
Uncommonly Well Defined 1856 Large Cent, PR 66 Brown NGC
1856 1C PR 66 Brown NGC. N-5, the only known dies. All 1856 large cents were struck from a single die pair. With an extant population of perhaps 100 pieces, this issue is one of the more readily available proof large cents. Both sides display a uniform, chocolate-brown appearance with no appreciable reflectivity. Nevertheless, the razor sharp strike, the three striations below Liberty's ear, and the die defect on the leaf to the left of the O in ONE, confirm this coin's proof status. Whispers of olive patina are intermingled throughout, but there are no bothersome hairlines or contact marks. (NGC ID# 2274, PCGS# 1997)
