Rarely Offered 1871 Cameo Proof Double Eagle1871 $20 PR62 Cameo NGC. One theme that runs through all the Type Two proof double eagles in this fabulous collection is rarity. The 1871 is another exceedingly rare coin. Only 30 proofs were struck, and it is believed that today only eight or nine of those struck are still extant as recognizable proofs. As one might imagine, the 1871 is almost never offered for sale. Walter Breen in his 1977 proof Encyclopedia was able to list only five examples, two of which are permanently impounded in museums. This coin has obvious hairlines, which of course, account for the grade. Several contact marks are also scattered over each side. The devices are lightly frosted with deeply reflective mirrors in the fields. A rare opportunity for the specialist. Population: 1 in 62, 3 finer (7/04).
