Description:
Rare 1879 Proof Double Eagle, PR61 Cameo NGC
1879 $20 PR61 Cameo NGC. As with all proof double eagles of this design type, the 1879 is very rare in the absolute sense. Only 30 pieces were produced, and from that number, the estimated number of survivors is in a narrow range. Akers estimates that only 10 or 11 pieces are extant, while Breen states that only 8-10 pieces have survived. With numbers like those, there are very few coins, and opportunities to buy those coins, that the collector has in the course of a lifetime.
While obviously hairlined, which explains the grade of this coin, there is still a remarkable amount of deep reflectivity in the fields on each side. Likewise, the devices show a noticeable amount of mint frost which gives the coin its cameo contrast. A few irregular patches of golden-brown patina are scattered around the peripheries, but the only contact marks of any importance are one just below the point of the bust and a couple of even smaller ones just above. Population: 1 in 61, 3 finer (8/04).
