Description:
Spectacular Cameo 1882 Double Eagle PR64
1882 $20 PR64 PCGS. The elusive 1882 Twenty Dollar, one of a mere 571 business strike produced, is ranked second in overall rarity among Liberty Double Eagle issues, behind only to the prohibitively rare 1861-P Paquet Reverse. As a result, there is heavy date pressure on the equally challenging proofs, of which just 59 coins were originally struck. The known population of surviving examples hovers at about a dozen pieces from each category, perhaps slightly exceeding that figure on the proofs.
The bright, glassy mirrors on this Choice specimen are exceptionally deep, particularly when tilted away from a light, and the profoundly contrasted devices are notable for their heavy frost. Close examination reveals a cluster of tiny contact marks in the left obverse field, primarily seen in the area just in front of Liberty's mouth. The overall eye appeal is nothing short of spectacular. An important offering among proof Coronet Double Eagles. Population: 2 in 64, 3 finer (10/03).
