Description:
Remarkably Appealing 1891 Double Eagle
PR63
Ultra Cameo
1891 $20 PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. The 1891 double eagle is rare in either proof format (52 pieces minted) or circulation strike (1,390 coins produced). The number of proof survivors is surprisingly high despite the small mintage. Michael Fuljenz and Douglas Winter (2000) say approximately 20 examples survive, and Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) estimate 20 to 25 extant specimens. Perusal of NGC/PCGS figures indicates the two services have certified 45 1891 proof twenties in non-Cameo, Cameo, and Ultra/Deep Cameo; a fair number of these are resubmitted coins or crossovers, however.
The current Select offering displays gold-on-black contrast when viewed at certain angles. Brass-gold and apricot colors compete for territory over both sides, each of which exhibits exquisitely struck design features. The numeric grade would undoubtedly be higher were it not for faint hairlines in the fields that show under magnification. The overall eye appeal is remarkable as appropriately recognized by the coveted Star designation and the CAC green label. Census: 1 in 63 Ultra Cameo, 3 finer Ultra Cameo (6/09).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 26EC, PCGS# 99107)
