Description:
Deep Cameo PR65 1896 Twenty Dollar
Exquisite Lemon Tint
1896 $20 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. As Garrett and Guth note in the Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, "The Proof 1896 double eagle is the first date in which the number of known examples is relatively high. Of the 128 pieces struck, 45 to 50 coins still remain." (That a surviving population of about four dozen coins -- rare regardless of condition -- should be "relatively high" is a testament to how challenging collecting proof gold is.) Just as the proof Morgan dollars of 1896 are prized for their high all-around quality, so too are the proof gold coins of the date, with the largest coins, the double eagles, most impressive of all when at their best. Near-ideal contrast conditions exist for a relative handful of coins, among them this Gem beauty.
The color on the coin is magnificent, strongly lemon-influenced with a touch of paling toward the central fields. The devices have their typically icy lightness, rich against the mirrored backdrop that gives the coin a black-and-gold appearance. A small and shallow disturbance of the frost is noted on Liberty's cheek and ranks as the most prominent pedigree marker, though it is not a serious threat to the coin's Gem status, as the CAC green label suggests. The PCGS Population Report is imbalanced toward non-Cameo coins, in direct contrast to the known appearance of the issue, but this Gem compares favorably to the broad spectrum of proof 1896 twenties; out of 31 total certification events at PCGS, only eight coins across all contrast categories received finer grades (2/12).
