Description:
1898 Twenty, PR63
Appealing Type Three Gold
1898 $20 PR63 NGC. With just 75 proofs produced and no more than 50 pieces surviving, the 1898 twenty is one in a sequence of Type Three double eagle proofs from the 1890s that are all rare and desirable. It is easy to overlook just how scarce these Type Three double eagle proofs are. They seldom appear at auction in higher grades, and when they do type collectors and proof gold specialists snap them up.

This Select Gem proof is an excellent opportunity to acquire such a coin. It is a brilliant, orange-gold example with high-contrast, frosted devices set against deeply reflective fields. The coin appears finer than the stated grade, with just the slightest hairlines visible with a magnifier. Two small contact marks (one near the bust point, the other touching the date) hallmark the piece and, with another small contact near the eagle's tail, apparently keep this beautifully detailed proof from an even higher grade. Census: 1 in 63, 0 finer (11/13).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 26EK, PCGS# 9114)
