Description:
Impressive 1900 Liberty Double Eagle
PR65 Cameo
1900 $20 PR65 Cameo NGC. The date is centered between the bust and the border, with the left edge of the base of the 1 over the center of a dentil. The J in J.B.L. is centered over the inside and outside left curves of the 9. The reverse is well executed with only slight unfinished work at the bottom of the spaces between the vertical shield stripes.
With a mintage of 124 pieces, the current number of survivors is estimated to be in the range of 50 to 60 coins. Jeff Garrett and John Dannreuther write: "Although the number of coins known for this date is relatively high for a Proof Liberty Head double eagle, many are impaired or otherwise damaged. There are probably around 50 examples known in all levels of preservation. The 1900 double eagle is seen with and without cameo devices." Based on their discussion, it can be presumed that the present piece is finer than most survivors. NGC has certified 32 proof 1900 double eagles, including 21 Cameo pieces and seven Ultra Cameo coins. The average numerical grade of all 32 submissions is PR64.6.
A modest obverse planchet flake attached to the inside point of star 12 may help to assist in pedigree research, as there are no other significant marks on either side. Only a few other tiny planchet flakes can be seen on either side, with some faint reverse hairlines. The intricately detailed obverse and reverse design motifs have a light coat of frosty yellow luster, surrounded by fully and deeply mirrored yellow-gold fields.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 26EM, PCGS# 89116)
