Description

1900 Proof 64 Double Eagle

1900 PR 64 Cameo NGC. Proofs of 1900 are considered rare by any measure. Only 124 pieces were struck, and of that number very few exist today. Estimates of the number of survivors range from a low of 30-35 pieces (Akers) to as many as 40-45 (Breen). We tend to agree with Walter's higher estimate.
This is an absolutely stunning coin. The devices are heavily frosted and contrast strongly against the illimitible depth of mirrored reflectivity in the fields. There are a couple of small marks on the obverse that prevent a gem grade, most notably in the field by star 2, and a small contact mark on the coronet through the T of LIBERTY. The reverse is immaculate and very nearly perfect. Both sides exhibit a light, opaque haze. A remarkable piece of proof gold that should see much interest from a wide range of bidders. This is the finest example thus far certified by NGC (6/96). (NGC ID# 26EM, PCGS# 9116)
