Select Proof 1904 Twenty
Rare Example With Cameo Contrast
Only 98 Pieces Minted
1904 $20 PR63 Cameo PCGS. Only 98 proof Liberty double eagles were struck in 1904, a considerable decrease from the 158 proofs produced the year before. The smaller proof gold denominations of 1904 also enjoyed higher reported mintage totals than the double eagle, but the twenty dollar coin seems to be more available than most of its proof counterparts. In Type Three Double Eagles 1877-1907, A Numismatic History and Analysis, Doug Winter and Michael Fuljenz estimate 40-45 examples of this issue are still extant, while PCGS currently postulates a surviving population of 55-65 coins in all grades. PCGS and NGC have combined to certify 108 total coins, 10 more than the original mintage, indicating that the population data is wildly inflated. The true number of survivors is probably close to 50-55 coins.
The Mint switched to an all-brilliant finish on proof coins in 1902, so coins of this era seldom show the popular cameo effect seen on many earlier proofs. The present coin is a happy exception to this rule, as the devices show considerable mint frost on both sides. While the contrast is not profound, this coin still demonstrates striking black-on-gold flash when tilted in the light. The design elements are sharply detailed, with full star centrils and fine definition on Liberty's curls. The surfaces are a vivid lemon-yellow color, with highlights of green and lilac. The fields are brightly mirrored, and show few signs of contact. Eye appeal is quite strong. We expect spirited competition when this lot is called. Population: 6 in 63 Cameo, 12 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 26ES, PCGS# 89120)
