1904 Liberty Head Twenty, PR65 Cameo
None Finer at PCGS With Cameo Surfaces
1904 $20 PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Proof Liberty Head double eagles are big, massive, incredibly rare gold coins that many dedicated collectors simply love. Heritage has been fortunate in recent offerings to have handled a wealth of high-grade proof Liberty twenties. And while this Platinum Night is memorable for quite a few business strike Saint-Gaudens and Liberty Head double eagles in remarkably high grade, the Liberty Head proof coins will also stand up in quality, even if fewer in number.
The year 1904 sticks in many collectors' minds as the largest mintage of the Philadelphia and San Francisco business strike twenties, massive productions totaling more than 11 million pieces between both mints combined. Even today, the 1904 double eagle is the issue most chosen for type purposes, and thousands survive in Mint State.
The proof 1904 double eagles, however, was produced in the small extent of only 98 pieces, and it is doubtful that more than half of that number survive to the present day. The population reports are, of course, laden with duplications.
The Mint had moved away from the deeply contrasted method of proof production in 1902, making Cameo examples such as the present Gem seldom seen. The surfaces show sufficient field-device contrast to merit the Cameo designation over bright yellow-gold surfaces that show no noticeable marks. The strikes appear full throughout each side, and the eye appeal is excellent. The last Gem Cameo PCGS example of this issue was a piece that brought $74,750 in our Stamford Coinfest Signature (Heritage, 10/2010), lot 5089.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 26ES, PCGS# 89120)
