Splendid Gem Proof 1906 Double Eagle1906 $20 PR66 NGC. It is estimated that between 50 and 60 proofs survive from a mintage of 94 coins. By 1906, there were many more collectors of means that even a decade earlier, and sales of the proof double eagles would have been much higher. It is possible that nearly all of the 94 coins produced actually found buyers by 1906. This is possibly the most common proof Liberty double eagle. Total PCGS and NGC populations exceed the original mintage by exactly two coins with 96 submissions certified.
This is a fully brilliant Gem with just a hint of cameo contrast. Every detail on each side is boldly defined. The surfaces are virtually pristine with only a couple faint hairlines, as well as a tiny disturbance on Liberty's cheek. This latter mark may be as struck, and almost has the appearance of a tiny lamination mark. There do not appear to be any lint marks or other pedigree identifiers.
