Exceedingly Rare Gem 1870 Liberty Ten Dollar, Cameo Proof Format1870 $10 PR65 Cameo NGC. The Philadelphia Mint produced just 4,025 business strike and 35 proof Liberty Eagles in 1870. Survivors are rare in both formats, and there are no Mint State coins known to either NGC or PCGS (1/02). This beautiful proof is one of just 10-12 coins believed extant (per Breen, 1988). The deeply reflective fields turn coal-black as the coin turns away from the light. The devices, on the other hand, are frosty in finish with a generally bold strike. As befits the grade, neither side reveals any bothersome hairlines. One of just five proof 1870 Eagles known to the two major grading services, only two of which have been designated Cameo (1/02).
