Description:
Extremely Rare 1875 PR64 Cameo Ten Dollar--One of Only 7-8 Proofs Believed Still Extant
1875 $10 PR64 Cameo NGC. Ex: Sweet. The 1875 is the undisputed key to the With Motto series of Liberty eagles. It is also one of the rarest and most coveted of all U.S. coins, regardless of denomination. This date is very rarely seen in any format as only 100 business strikes were produced and a paltry 20 proofs were struck. Probably no more than 5-6 business strikes remain today in all grades, and a mere 7-8 proofs are believed extant, two of which are in museums.
This is a absolutely splendid example of this major 19th century rarity. The fields show illimitable depth of mirrored reflectivity and the devices are nicely frosted, which presents a strong cameo contrast on each side. The surfaces are lightly hairlined, this being the only factor that keeps the coin from a full Gem grade, as there are no contact marks on either side that are visible without a magnifier.
We are uncertain of the provenance of this particular piece. Harry Bass and John Pittman lacked this issue. It is not the Trompeter coin, nor is it the piece from Auction '90, the Eliasberg coin, or the Byron Reed proof. Tracing this important coin's pedigree would be a challenging and rewarding pursuit for its new owner. (#88815) (Registry values: P8) (NGC ID# 28FD, PCGS# 88815)
