Low Mintage 1877 Eagle--Among The Finest Known1877 PR 64 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. Another low total mintage date with only 797 business strikes and 20 proofs produced. No more than ten proofs survive today with two of those impounded in museums and at least one impaired, placing the 1877 on the same rarity level as the 1867, 1868, 1871, 1873, and 1875.
The rich orange-gold surfaces retain almost all of the original flash in the fields and there are very few hairlines present, giving this piece strong, almost full-gem visual appeal. Fully struck on the star radials, there is just the slightest bit of softness noted on the hair curls and feathers on the eagle's leg. The devices are fully frosted and contrast noticeably against the deep mirrors in the fields. Identifiable by a faint alloy streak below the bun on the obverse and a tiny planchet flake next to star 2.
