Description:
Choice Proof 1884 Liberty Ten
Very Rare in High Grade
Ex: Farouk-Norweb
1884 $10 PR64 PCGS. Only 45 proof Liberty eagles were struck in 1884, and probably no more than seven to 10 examples survive today. The 1884 is particularly rare in high grade, and no coins have been certified in grades above the Gem level. The present coin claims a distinguished pedigree, first to the famous Norweb Collection, and before that to the fabulous collection of King Farouk of Egypt. Interestingly, the cataloger of the Farouk offering transposed the numerals of the date when this coin was described as part of lot 210, listing the coin as an "1848 brilliant proof." This has undoubtedly caused some confusion over the years.
This stunning Choice specimen displays sharply detailed design elements throughout, with deeply mirrored yellow and greenish-gold surfaces that show only a few minor hairlines and contact marks. Eye appeal is outstanding. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 3 in 64, 1 finer (11/12).
Ex: Palace Collections of Egypt (Sotheby's, 2/1954), lot 210; Norweb Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 3/1988), lot 2237.
