Description

1884 PR 65 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. Business strike 1884 eagles are scarce and underrated, but the rarity of proofs from this year is quite another matter. Only 45 proofs were struck and for some unknown reason many, if not most, were melted. Today proofs are of the highest order of rarity with Akers estimating only 7-8 survivors. The date is so elusive that it was missing from many of the major gold collections assembled in the past century. It was lacking from the extensive runs of dated gold assembled by Garrett, Eliasberg, Carter, and King Farouk. The fields are deeply mirrored with the typical "orange peel" appearance common to proof gold of this era. There are a few noticeable hairlines in the fields but these do not detract significantly from the overall eye appeal of the coin, and the devices are heavily frosted, lending a cameoed effect. A visually impressive coin and an important piece for advanced gold collectors. Population: 1 in 65, none finer (11/98).
Ex: Amon Carter Collection (Stack's, 1/84), lot 780. (NGC ID# 28FN, PCGS# 8824)
