Description:
1885 PR 65 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. One of only 67 proofs of this date struck, of which Akers estimates that only 15-18 survive, many of them impaired in some way. Not one of the rarities of the With Motto series, but much scarcer than the mintage might indicate. The fields are deeply mirrored with the typical "orange peel" appearance common to proof gold of this era. The cameo contrast is somewhat muted by the orange color, but the devices are so frosty there is still a nice night and day appearance. The fields are remarkably clean, with few marks worth mentioning. For an identifier, we offer a tiny mark in front of Liberty's forelock. NGC and PCGS have each graded only one coin in 65, therefore this piece is tied for the finest known. We doubt that the PCGS graded coin is nicer than this piece. Population: 1 in 65, with none certified finer (11/98).
Ex: Henry Chapman (12/1895); John H. Clapp Collection (1942); Eliasberg Collection (Bowers & Ruddy Galleries, 10/82), lot 782. (NGC ID# 28FP, PCGS# 8825)
