Affordable Select Proof 1889 Eagle1889 $10 PR63 PCGS. The 1889 is a very rare issue in proof format. It is the rarest proof Liberty Eagle of the 1885-1907 era with an extant population (per Akers, 1980 and Breen, 1988) of approximately 12 coins. If this estimate is correct, then a decent number of proof 1889 Eagles in today's market may be impaired because NGC and PCGS combined have certified just ten pieces in all grades. The present example is not without its problems, but, nonetheless, it represents an important bidding opportunity for the advanced gold specialist. Both sides are sharply struck with rich orange-gold color. The proof finish is readily evident, both sides being lightly cameoed. There are scattered hairlines in the fields, and a large scratch is in the obverse field between stars 1 and 3.
