Exceedingly Rare 1891 Proof Ten Dollar, PR641891 $10 PR64 PCGS. The 1891 is on an equal footing with the 1889. It is also the rarest denomination of the year. Only 15 pieces are believed extant today out of the 48 proofs that were struck. The fields are deeply mirrored with the orange-peel effect that is often seen on gold proofs from the 1880s and 1890s. The devices are lightly frosted with some cameo effect on each side, but probably not quite enough to warrant a cameo designation on the insert. A few light alloy spots are seen in the lower obverse field between Liberty's neck and stars 1 and 2. Just the slightest haze is seen on the obverse. (NGC ID# 28FW, PCGS# 8831)
