Cameoed Near-Gem Proof 1893 Eagle1893 $10 PR64 Cameo NGC. This year marked the first time that the Philadelphia Mint used its newly installed hydraulic press for striking proof coinage. However, there is no obvious change in the appearance of the coins. Only 55 proof Tens were made in this year, but far fewer exist today with perhaps as few as 15-18 survivors known in all grades. This is one of the finest pieces known, and it is also unquestionably one of the most attractive and eye appealing examples extant today. Close examination reveals a subtly variegated golden-rose and lilac coloration on each side. The fields display illimitable depth of mirrored reflectivity that is only dampened by the slightest overlay of haziness. The dies were, in fact, so heavily polished that the curls at the back of Liberty's neck are disconnected. The devices are heavily frosted and present a sharp two-toned contrast against the "blackness" in the mirrored fields. Population: 5 in 64, 0 finer (2/03). (PCGS# 88833)
