1894 Ten Dollar, PR64 Deep Cameo
Sole Deep Cameo Graded by PCGS
1894 $10 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Among the curious aspects of the proof 1894 ten dollar issue, as noted by Garrett and Guth, is that "although cameo examples of this date appear to be the rule, Proofs with deep cameo contrast are the exception." A look at the two major certified populations confirms this. While PCGS is imbalanced toward non-Cameo coins (6 non-Cameo, 2 Cameo, 1 Deep Cameo), in part due to early certifications that gave no regard to Cameo status, NGC has a much more obvious Cameo-weighted distribution, with just one each of non-Cameo and Ultra Cameo flanking 10 Cameo proofs, as of (11/13). While the NGC Ultra Cameo coin is graded PR66, the combination of PCGS certification as Deep Cameo and a CAC green label makes this PR64 coin plenty appealing to the right buyer.

Leaving aside these ultramodern coin-market concerns, the proof 1894 ten dollar is a rare coin plain-and-simple with a mintage of just 43 pieces and an imperfect, albeit decently strong survival rate, listed at "25 to 30 known" in the PCGS Population Report. This example's contrast is as strong as the Deep Cameo designation suggests, beautifully black-and-gold with ample frost everywhere but a small hollow surrounding the ear where the layer thins. While the pale yellow fields with their orange-peel texture show a handful of light hairlines and related flaws, most visibly a small depression just to the left of Liberty's nose, the sheer all-around eye appeal makes this coin a winner.(Registry values: P2) (PCGS# 98834)
