Gorgeous 1894 PR 64 PCGS Eagle1894 PR 64 PCGS. A magnificent example of this rare proof eagle. In 1894 the Philadelphia Mint only struck 43 eagles in proof. Over the ensuing years most have been cleaned or mishandled in some way, and few have been submitted to the grading services. In fact, The PCGS Population Report notes only 5 proofs graded as follows: 55, 61, 63, 64 and 65. Therefore, this is coin is the second best certified by PCGS over the years (4/97).
The fields possess the magical "orange peel" texture seen on gold proofs of the era, and the devices are nicely frosted providing great contrast. Identifiable by a minute spot clinging to a dentil between the left wing of the eagle and the first S of STATES. An important coin that has everything favorable: rarity, condition, and beauty, and each of these in abundance. (NGC ID# 28FZ, PCGS# 8834)
