1894 Eagle, Select Cameo Proof1894 PR 63 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. A fully brilliant example of this rare proof eagle. In 1894 the Philadelphia Mint only struck 43 proof eagles. Over the ensuing years most have been cleaned or mishandled in some way, and few have been submitted to the grading services. Currently, a total of 10 pieces have been graded by both services combined (11/98), this piece is bettered by only three coins at NGC.
The fields possess the magical "orange peel" texture seen on gold proofs of the era, and the devices are nicely frosted providing great contrast. Identifiable by a vertical mark adjacent to the eagle's right wing at it joins the body. An important coin that has everything favorable: rarity, condition, and beauty. (NGC ID# 28FZ, PCGS# 8834)
