Description

Finest Known 1897 Proof Ten Dollar

1897 PR 64 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. Breen estimates that 35-40 proofs survive from the original mintage of 69 pieces, Akers thinks only 20-25 examples. The coin meets the criteria set out in Breen's Comprehensive Encyclopedia for proofs of this date: "low date slanting up to right, light repunching on base of 1." Deeply mirrored in the fields, the strike is slightly weak on the eyebrow, hair above the ear, and correspondingly on the arrow butts, claws, and some of the feathers. Interestingly enough, some foreign material apparently adhered to the die during the striking process, and caused a "flaky" appearance on portions of the frosted obverse device. These small pits should not to be confused with a post-striking impairment. Currently (11/98), this is the finest example graded by either service. (NGC ID# 28G4, PCGS# 8837)
