Description:

1898 Ten Dollar, PR66 Ultra Cameo
Deeply Contrasted, Top-Notch Example
1898 $10 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. Ultra Cameo or Deep Cameo examples of proof silver, in the form of Morgan dollars or Seated coinage, or proof gold, in the form of Liberty Head types, are high on the want lists of many collectors. The coins of 1896 through 1898, all denominations, are among the most pleasingly and deeply contrasted survivors of American coinage from the late 19th century.

This reputation for the 1896-98 coins is further compounded by the fact that the Mint, in 1902, adopted a new format for proof coinage of all denominations, one that abandoned the former ideal of highly polished, reflective fields (the surfaces of the dies, the fields of the coins) contrasting starkly against unpolished die recesses (the raised devices of the coins, showing thick mint frost as a result).

The present 1898 Liberty Head ten dollar is one of three submissions at NGC in the PR66 Ultra Cameo echelon, and six Ultra Cameos are finer -- five in PR67 Ultra Cameo including one Star coin, and a single PR68 Ultra Cameo. PCGS has seen none in this grade, but a single PR67 Deep Cameo is finer (3/13). It must be stressed that these are likely not all separate coins, and we believe that, overall, the percentage of duplications in the certified populations is increasing, not decreasing.

This coin certainly appears high-end for the grade. The sole mentionable contact we see is a small scrape near a point of star 1, along with some subtle slide marks at the chin. Most of the marks that might show in a photograph are actually on the slab. Splendid, deep field-device contrast is evident throughout, and the strike is full. The last "white" vertical shield stripe to the right shows some filling, characteristic of the proof die. Census: 3 in 66 Ultra Cameo, 5 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 28G5, PCGS# 98838)
