Gem Cameo Proof 1899 Ten Dollar1899 $10 PR65 Cameo NGC. Much like the Trompeter specimen which we sold more than six years ago, this glittering proof Eagle is notable for the stark contrast between the glassy fields and the chalky, well frosted devices. A mere 86 pieces are reported to have been produced for collectors in the waning months of the 19th century, of which it is estimated that up to 40 percent failed to survive either outright or as recognizable proofs. The devices exhibit a slight halo effect that spills over into the mirrored fields. Future attribution can be facilitated by a tiny vertical planchet flaw to the left of the portrait's base. Population: 9 in 65 Cameo, 5 finer (5/05).
