1899 $10 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC....
Second Finest Certified 1899 Proof Eagle1899 $10 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. The base of the 1 in the date is minutely doubled, and its left edge is over the center of a dentil. The entire date is about centered in the space between the bust and border. These characteristics are common to the proofs of this issue, although additional study is required to determine if the obverse die was also used on any business strikes.
PR67 Ultra Cameo
PR67 Ultra Cameo
This pristine proof eagle has amazing contrast between the wavy, mirrored, orange-peel fields, and the fully brilliant, lustrous yellow-gold devices. Only a few minuscule planchet flakes on the obverse and tiny orange spots on the reverse are visible to aid in pedigree research. Every aspect of this aesthetically desirable piece is all that the connoisseur could want. It is believed that only about 25 to 30 examples of this issue survive in proof format, and most of the survivors are in lower grades than the present piece. Among the survivors are two examples in the Smithsonian Institution, each grading PR64 Deep Cameo.
The typical NGC certified 1899 proof eagle has modest cameo contrast rather than the thick contrast of this example. That service has certified 39 proof eagles of this date, with 28 designated as Cameo, and only eight as Ultra Cameo. Among those in the latter category is a single finer PR68 Ultra Cameo piece. The present example is the only PR67 Ultra Cameo that NGC has certified, the second finest certified 1899 proof eagle.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 28G6, PCGS# 98839)
