Original Proof 1899 Eagle, A Nearly Pristine Specimen1899 $10 PR 64 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint delivered only 86 proof Liberty eagles in 1899, fewer than 30 of which are believed extant. Writing in 1977, Breen opines that the 1899 is "much rarer than commonly believed..." Nicely cameoed, the surfaces are yellow-gold in color with modest olive accents that appear as the coin rotates beneath a light. We can find no singularly mentionable distractions, but a small contact mark in the field above the last two digits in the date should serve as a useful pedigree marker. A bright and flashy specimen, we recommend this coin for inclusion in either an advanced gold collection or a proof type set.
